Cherries & Nishin Soba

Nishin soba is a traditional Japanese bowl dish made with soba noodles, hot tsuyu broth, herring filets, shiitake mushrooms, sake, sugar, mirin, soy sauce, and dashi. Kyoto is famous for its nishin soba..

Jindai-ji (Jindai temple) in Chofu is famous for soba noodles, you can eat there or purchase a package of dry soba noodles to make at home— this time I did both..

Boo used to be a slang word for marijuana, it was not common among people I knew in the 1960s, I think is was more associated with earlier jazz musicians.

Duh is the old story of the no-longer-a-job milkman —when I grew up instead of buying milk at a store a milkman used to deliver milk in the early morning. using a horse and wagon , and later a milk truck. The milk came in bottles , when the bottle was empty you washed it out and put it on the porch for pickup the next morning . You could leave the milkman a note with your order in the small milk box on the porch.

The small boy asks his mother “Duh, Mother, why do I say Duh all the time?” She replied. ”I don’t know go ask your father.”

The small boy asked his father “Duh, Father ,why do I say Duh all the time?” He replied. ”I don’t know go ask your sister”.

The small boy asked his sister “Duh, Sis, why do I say Duh all the time?” She replied. ”I don’t know”, go ask the milkman.”.

And eye is the camera . A photograph shows change not by showing the changing but by showing what did not change.Though we lived in the house it was always “the house” even though it was changing all the time,

A camera is a machine, which extends our eye, and enables us to transcend time as well as space. A camera can make many kinds of images, most of which may not make “sense” to the human eye which sees like the “correctly exposed” image made using a camera.

The “traditional” film image and the “digital ” image on a drive are both yet to be photographs,. the human eye cannot yet experience the image. Maybe there is an application which enables the computer to “see” a directory of jpg files and sort them out by “things” humans can see

Almost everyday walking along Alameda Creek, its another day to be the only planet with “scientifically known intelligent life” in Universe ..

Same tree but color has changed, same ground but texture has changed . . . same sky but blue or gray— it watching the same things change.

Trees ,ground,, sky, what are these things?

One day small, anther day big; one day green, another day brown; , one day blue, another day grey —its still tree, ground, sky .

We see things by comparing things to each other and finding they are not the same. No two things in the universe are the same . Life must differentiate between things which enable survival from those that do not —I can eat this thing, I cannot eat that thing.

Other things we can only measure ordinally—put them into an order without knowing the difference between them. This one is big,. that one is heavy, that one is faraway, that person is intelligent. But ordinal measurements always require a comparison, another standard. In a group of apples some will be heavier than others but you only know that after you experience them or the person making the statement brings previous experience —the fruit produce person says “This is a big apple.” because they have seen so many apples in their life.

Everyday people throughout history were comparing , differentiating, and defining,—“This is good,” “That is bad., “Can eat this” or “Can’t eat that.”

Some things we can measure with .interval level accuracy—I need 36 inches of that cloth; Two cups of water and one-third cup of flour; a 9″ x 12″ rug . . .

Other things are not so definitive. The problem is not so much measuring something as comparing one thing to another which requires tools based on common measurable qualities, such as inches, kilograms or degrees .Most of our decisions are based on choosing something over other things and we need some standard y to measure them.

Before language, early people did not have words, they had to experience and from experience developed and evolved words and language most of which is about differentiating things and measuring and comparing them to make choices.. What is a“same thing,” what is a “different thing”

And daily people are measuring themselves,,perhaps even causing anxiety and fear. while manly who don o measurement of themselves are busy being arrogant ,and usually bullying others

On earth there are different languages . If there are “Real Things ” then translation would be just a matter of matching the right sound to the thing.

But as translators have often discussed, its not so simple, even within a society there are differences between written and spoken words, and in different languages .many nuances among words representing the same thing. make it difficult translate. the differences..When there is only one language on Earth ir will be easier to for people to communicate, but there will be a lot less to communicate.
Or maybe not, when yo consider that congress passes laws written by lawyers which seem very clear only to find when they are enforce ,usually to wealthy people, that the words have little or no meaning.

Photographs for me may not be about the moment in front of the lens but about the relationship between of lines, the shapes, colors, gestures , i.e. the visual artistic variables.

Friends on a visit. The snow geese stopped by for a few days last year or maybe last spring, The local geese are holding their heads up straight and looking so proud as if they are showing off their guests to the less fortunate.

Different languages have more agreement with words which represent things for which we have tools designed by humans which use common mathematical intervals to measure a thing, such as meters or kilograms and less for things which use ordinal or nominal level “tools” to measure such as bigger or smaller,, more or less, You can compare a house to a rock measuring inches but it has very little practical use and you can compare a parent”s love for their child, but its either really obvious when parent does not lover their child or you find that people have many qualitatively different ways of expressing their love. which cannot be measured or compared quantitively.

The eye is busy visually experiencing while the brain is busy defining things . It could be the eye sees things and the brain learns this is a thing as well as the eye sees and the brain defines what was seen as a “thing.” Humans created and evolved language based on very different life experiences than we have now, and learning language both enables communication while giving us word meanings which may be more applicable to the past and may influence how we behave int he present and, of course, the future.

Its another day to be on the only planet in the Universe with “scientifically known intelligent life”— and here we are busy killing each other.while trying to find a balance between compassion for others and pragmatic for ourselves.

Causes and effects—There are special effects, collateral effects, body effects, Its Human Nature to do things, and when its things we do not want to do, maybe do not have the skill to do them, we might pay others to do them for us because its a good investment,

I like to get my shadow to do things for me, its not too expensive, and when it makes a mistake it cannot run and hide.

Sometimes I think to have my own back and feel like I am going sideways , barely treading water.

Or then its not exactly what I want. but when I look find it.

What kind of society do we have when we seek full employment to provide maximum jobs by growing an economy which produce an unending supply of new and different products base1d on constantly changing popular whims and superficial feelings at the expense of basic survival for many and the loss of meaningful personal achievement for most.

Second Tallest but that’s alright ma

Saw a nice image of a certain famous San Francisco, no longer the tallest, building , taken decades ago which reminded me of some fun I had with images of this building.


Its a fun building and the opportunities with light are diverse all day.

On the north east side of the building is a small redwood park with some sculpture, a fountain, and a cement pond , on a sunny morning the building i you can see the reflections of the building in the moving water .


Reminds me of old German etchings of towns.

With all the hills in San Francisco its not too much of a jump —


Or something to do when I was bored or at loss for words.

Alameda Creek

Almost everyday I leave my home and walk along Alameda Creek trail. Over the past 14 years and for 12 years before that while walking my dog, I have met many different people along the trail, some I get to know a little, we stop and talk,

Then, other times, for the whole four miles I will not see anyone I know even to say “hi.”—I almost always say “Hi,” after all ,we are all out here for the same reason, we share a common purpose and and should help each other to maintain our commitment.to that purpose, our health.

We are out here for the exercise, and while exercising we do not have malicious intentions, We share a common bond of purpose and peace with others.

Last week I met Joe, along the creek, a long time Fremont resident, immigrated from Afghanistan decades ago and drove a cab in Fremont for 30 years.

Fremont is a sprawling suburb made up of five townships in 1957, still no central shopping district, a very diverse population many of whom work engineering .and the city is still working to develop an identity both as a “Fremont”,and as a group of “diverse neighborhoods” each with its own proud identity—too often it looks like “neighborhood identity” is a zero sum game.

While in art school I had driven a cab in an urban city, where many residents do not own cars and often take cabs for short distances, especially when there are packages. Joe’s experiences in Fremont. as he related to me, were mostly long runs such as to Oakland or San Jose,

Long trips are more money for less work—each trip with a fare is its own experience, and while driving was s one part of the job, dealing with was was another.

Turkey vultures: Nothing in the Universe goes to waste, it is all being used all the time by the Universe , whether it is creating or destroying things.. For the word “thing” there are no “non-things;” if there is some thing that we do not know, we don”t know we don”t know. and once we find such a thing it gets a name and we know it. as a “thing”

Driving the fare from one place to another is the hackney job but even packages, which do not have a personality to deal with can be eventful.

Once on the cab stand called “The Eight” in East Cambridge— The Eight was the number the cab company dispatcher used to ID the stand, it was a slow cab stand but constant and few cabs stood there.. When you arrived or left at a cab stand you notified the dispatcher ad when there was a customer request to the dispatcher the ranking cab onthe standgot the job.

Brattle Cab was based in East Cambridge where many people were like a society in itself separated from the academic society and City Hall was East Cambridge Society.

Local people did not have cars and lived in apartments.and you could find three and four generations of families.

One night st3anding on The Eight the dispatcher asked me if I want to chase a bar in Inman Square, a few blocks beyond the area of The Eight, I took the job , and when I got there the bartender was outside on the curb in front of the bar flagging me while holding up an older woman. The bartender—very unusual, I should have sensed something,but it was his job and my job so I took her.

I asked her where she wanted to go , her reply, “Take me to Union Square (Somerville) and I will tell you where to go from there.”

Along the way I tried to have conversation with her but to no avail, too often her words were not understandable.

Reaching Union Square I stopped right in front of the police station, turned around and asked her again “Where do want to go from here?” No response, so I got out of the cab , went around to the other side, opened the back door and found she seemed to be unconscious.

Meanwhile a Somerville policeman came running down the station steps , yelling at me, “No parking., move the cab!” I tried to explain what was going, he called for “help”, they decided she was drunk and pulled the woman from the car and dragged her into the station never saw them or her again, and they never even asked my name or for my cab license .

The reason I was hanging out in this area was that at a slow time the local bingo at the local Catholic church was about to get out and there were always a few quick jobs, i.e .Bingo Rush Hour, so I left. .Turns out I was the last person to whom she consciously spoke—she died in my cab, or so they said.

The cabs had older style radios, the dispatcher called you and every driver with their radio on heard the dispatcher call, but when the driver answered only the dispatcher heard the driver,
One night while driving the dispatcher called my number “72” —everyone hears,— . I answer “72”. only the dispatcher hears — Dispatcher calls “Stop by the Somerville Police Department ASAP, they want to talk to you about the dead body in your cab.”

A patented design for a bus seat

I came across this on the internet, .my grandfather’s name was Ray William Naegele, my grandmother’s maiden name was Stephens. The first son was William, the second, my father, was Ray Stephens Naegele and I was Ray Stephens Naegele Jr.

I don’t know if he did the drawing, he must have done some sketching anyway. Looking at the curves in the profile at the bottom of the chair, they were drawn using a curved rule.In art school we used a ruling pen and a rapidograph to learn to draw rules. Computers changed all that, but before the ruling pen was an essential tool for making comprehensive sketches to show clients.

Going through some of my packed-away stuff, I came some flats, story created and drawn by Ira Harmon sometime in the early 1980s. I like how he uses line and point of view while no words are needed to tell the story. Its not just that the things—the cars, buildings, people, trees—are there, the design of the things, including the design of light and dark, leads the eye through the page. And consider, a car chase between a Delorean and a Bug?

Not sure how I came to be in possession of them. At the time we both lived in the same six apartment building downtown San Jose. it was an older style eleven blocks east on Santa Clara.

William Conrad voiced the role on the radio (1952-1961) if ever there was the voice of Matt Dillion his was surely it, however for the TV series he was said to be too short and too round—qualities which he embraced on his successful TV show Cannon.

I was born in 1945, I do not remember ever listening— myself, with my family or with friends to the old time radio shows or even anyone talking about them —though my father used to like Bob and Ray but that was a 15 minute comedy show in the 1950s, not a weekly radio story such as Fibber McGee and Molly, Henry Aldrich, Our Miss Brooks or Palladin —the last two also had their own TV series.

Law?? The King’s Law, the Khan’s Law, God’s Law, Natural Law, the Laws of Science ? Or political laws of a sovereign geo-political nation-state with taxpayer funded police and military.

For Nietzsche law was a tool for elites to control society. For Hobbes and Chinese Legalists law is a tool for controlling the base instincts of human nature using police action and jail.

What are laws and why do we have them?

What is order?

Order is when a group of people has food, shelter and survives over generations. I call it a society as individual behaviour interacts like a network.with each other. Order happens when individuals behave in a way that enables my definition above and t3hey survive—They do not kill each other; they “work” to get food and water; they ”co-operate” with each other .

The history of humans on Earth is the story of every human being who ever lived is not a story of being getting everyone to be good, but a story of Can the good overcome the bad?

Individuals must make behaviourial concessions to their own needs as well as the needs of society, be it family, spouse, parents, work etc.

Looking at the range of various societies which make up human history gives a sense of what individuals are willing to concede? or submit? As well as what people are willing to do to or for others to get something they want.

The idea of Democracy is not that the majority gets to impose their will on the minority, the assumption of majority and minority are not part of it.

Society is made up of individuals who can understand their own situation in life, evaluate their life options and express them with others in communication, and learn to find a common ground which benefits the most possible for society at the least cost to individuals or at least those individuals who actively participate in the democratic process.

Success is when few enough individuals are so dissatisfied they are willing to commit acts which disrupt the society that they are just minor criminals and not seeking to overthrow the political power of the society. Maybe that is as good as it gets.

No work, no eat—maybe some would think that child labor laws discriminate against the opportunuty for children to work 40, or 50, or 60 hours a week. Are homeless a part of our society or are they the enemy —

imagine being someone’s enemy and your own enemy at the same time —the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Or imagine being 14 years old and for 10 hours a day be painting roosters and flowers on some potter’s bowls . . .

Shado blankets

I made images of my shadow, often you could see my head and the camera in my hand. Using those images I made repeating shado images to make patterns on something like I imagined Navajo Blankets.

How many dimensions is a shadow? You could say two dimensions but it takes three dimensions to make a shadow, its not just the surface but something has to block the light going to the surface.

When you think about dimensions there are no two dimensional things—except a shadow—or even one dimensional things; these are concepts we use as tools for understanding, communicating and making things.

People sensually (see, hear, taste. touch and smell) experience the universe in the three or four (space-time) dimensions, maybe we will never know any other way to experience the Universe. At same time we a part of the Universe, life through each of us is the Universe experiencing itself.

In sociology, socialization is the process of internalizing the norms and ideologies of society. Socialization encompasses both learning and teaching and is thus “the means by which social and cultural continuity are attained”. Socialization is strongly connected to developmental psychology.

There is a socialization process with a specific outcome—behaviorial integration of the individual into society. And a non-socialization outcome must mean that individual’s behavior is not integrated into the society.

Does the process not work sometimes?

Socialization is not about an individual going from zero to a normative functioning adult in a society—going from nothing to something. It is just happening as the individual behaves, or as the individual lives in society.

However all the adults “come out”, so to speak, are the “results” of the socialization process in which each individual’s experiences are unique but still there is enough normative or common behavior among individuals to enable society to survive.

People learn by doing.

Are there not “biological influences” on behaviour?

The things we do not do are the things we do not know (about).

If everyone in the society had integrity , ethics, compassion, empathy and remorse, would we then not have bad behaviour in our society? If everyone in society behaved with those qualities (or any bad behaviours) would people undergoing socialization in such a society behave those good behaviours? i.e,. there be no bad behaviours.

If we have those words, those meanings, recognizing these behaviours in our society it means that we also have their opposite behaviours in our society.

We would not have those words in our language to identify those bad or good behaviours if we all behaved this way—we would not know about the bad behaviours.

Walden II tried to explore that, and I like the Wikipedia blurb:

Walden Two is a utopian novel written by behavioral psychologist B. F. Skinner, first published in 1948. In its time, it could have been considered science fiction, since science-based methods for altering people’s behavior did not yet exist. Such methods are now known as applied behavior analysis.

The book is incredibly boring, which I thought was Skinner’s point in writing the book—Imagine how boring life would be without human differences in behaviour.

But then I wonder: Why does there have to be some living human beings who suffer as examples of the bad behaviours in life so that from their suffering others can know the good behavours?

People who’s life’s purpose is to be an example of what not to do? Does society’s need tor social solidarity require some people to be murderers so others can see how not to be a murderer?

Or is that just the way life is along Alameda Creek?

How would you feel if you lost everything you owned? Sometimes I see a homeless person with a shopping cart full of junk, sometimes I speak with them , and again learn just how important owning some “thing” is important to people.

Appropriate Sunday afternoon behaviour in a San Francisco Park —perhaps the only better place to read this book would be Nob Alley serenaded by the monotonous blaring of a fog horn on a dark San Francisco night.

Finnegans Wake (no apostrophe please ), fun to read, can pick it up anytime, anywhere, open it up, read (out loud) for awhile, enjoy it, and put it back down, You do not even need to mark your place, the next time you pick it up just repeat, open anywhere and read (out loud) for awhile and put it back down again, Wherever you open it up to, you will never have lost your place. And you do get to the end, the last sentence of the book is the first half of the first sentence. Its a book which is never confusing. (Hahahaha.)

What is this world we live in now?

A society where our lives are working to get money to consume things—food, shelter, clothes, entertainment, medical care—and the making of those things we consume, as well as the cleaning up after we consume them, are destroying Earth..

Life on Earth is the whole of what people do, it is not what some people do while what other people do is not life. And money is an important part of it.

How do we understand money?

Money enables a sustainable society—a group of people— in which individuals can produce products which have different levels of demand by different individuals in the society over a period of time and everyone can get enough wealth to live, hopefully to live well enough so that violent change over the distribution of life’s basic needs is no needed—social cohesiveness.

In a society where trade and barter are the only production and distribution , the products in their market are very limited and most people can produce most of their needs by themselves.

As society develops people who produce coats have a different market demand than people who produce lettuce than those who produce cars and so on.. After the coat producer trades a coat to a farmer, it maybe years before the farmer needs another coat but the coat producer needs needs food on a short term regular basis.

The work of both, the tailer and the farmer, is represented by money which enables product exchange to happen and results in a more technologically advanced but more inter-dependent society where money is an important part of a stable society.

I try to walk daily along Alameda Creek, leaving my house I see my neighbors, stretch out a little and and listen to podcasts and think about “things,” — “Is there such a thing as “Human Nature”?.”

“Its human nature!!, thats why” Is there such a thing as “Human Nature”?

If there is such a “thing” What would it mean? That behavour defined as“ Human Nature” is caused, or determined—by a common Universal law that determines all human beings will behave in accordance with—We all do it!

Its a quality which is a part of every person, we would all have it and it would be expressed in our common behaviour.

Would we have the same amount of human nature or is it distributed among individuals on a continuum — some individuals might have more or less of it than others. John behaves with more compassionate than does Jill, Jill has more artistic talent than John.

Prhaps in the name of “learning” we apply interval level math to measure it — John is 6 1/2 inches taller than Jill who weights 54 pounds less than John. who lives 20 minutes further from work than does Jill. Or we could say, John is taller than Jill who weighs less than John and it takes him longer to drive to work.

As each person travels through Space-Time, their life is a unique path, perhaps comparing and then ranking the path of each individual using an independent standard makes it easier to objectify other people and miss out on the wonders of their lives.

Each path is separate, no matter how often the pushback tells you its the same, uneventful path as so many others.

Human nature is embedded in our biological material existence, humans do not have sonar like bats; gills like fish; a nose like a dog, we have our own human nature.

On those clearly human qualities, such as the five senses,we find some people are naturally born without them—such as sight or hearing—and we refer to them with words which suggest “not a complete person”—yet wherever there is a a society of humans living there are some who are born blind and some who are born deaf ———where is the concept of common human nature now?

Or is it that “the qualities we associate with the definition of ‘Human Nature’ not only are distributed in varying degrees among individuals but in some individuals are actually not present— think of compassion, empathy and remorse.

We say: Its human nature to want more than you have; its human nature to cheat people when you can get away with it; its human nature to be lazy; When we say this we asset that all people are thus driven to behave badly by the very condition of of being human.And when we make that judgement we come to the “obvious conclusion ” that the purpose of law in a society is prevent people from doing bad.

But humans did not start out with the ability to know this, they only got there after doing a lot of really bad things to others along the way, inhumane stuff, like killing others and stealing property and making law and order as a tool l to defend from others what the group in power stole in the first place,. This is why law without justice for the past is always just more of the problem.

For a period of time the Fogg exhibited three small, same-size, Rembrandt paintings at the same time right next to each other, head shots of himself, his father and Christ, and while they were hanging oI often stopped in to see them—The Fogg was free then but that was over 40 years ago, there may be entrance fees now.

We are what we look like, by definition anyway —”I see you coming down the street,or I recognize you in the photograph.

We all know, its common knowledge, its common sense, there is more to our self but its not immediately known solely by being seen.

In popular media such as film and TV, for actors their “physical self” is the stock and trade, or at least the pass to getting in the door for the next job..

How can we not know ourselves? . . . might as well ask . . .

How can we knot no ourselves?

Sometimes it was too mis-leading to get my heard around it . .

Like an epiphany which increasingly mismanages me daily.

I was like a shadow always looking for new ways to see things,

That’s how I got here in the last and first place.

Embed yourself in your own nature and your own tailwind will seek you out.
