Schemeless seamless dreams

Half Price moments

The creation of writing was a qualitative change in human history.—clay tablet, vellum, , paper, manuscripts, books and now electronic.

A retired history teacher, we discussed quantitative versus qualitative approaches to history.

I used to like to go to bookstores. Decades ago when I was traveling around new England in my van , if I passed through a small town and there was a used bookstore, I would stop and visit.

A photography teacher in the photography section.

Living in East (San Francisco) Bay, on Sundays we used to visit North Berkeley, have some Chinese breakfast ,browse the Art & Craft Co-op and the Black Oak Bookstore in North Berkeley,

This man talked about his daughter, for about 20 minutes straight, I listened to the history of her career. He was very proud of her.

I like wandering through the shelves looking at the books. I enjoyed doing it at the library also, but there was no talking !

This man talked about Vedanta and Dyhyana in the “religion” section.

I enjoyed doing it at the library also, but there was no talking !

This man was a career mechanic who enjoyed working on cars so much that even on his day off he was enjoying learning more about cars.

In the city where I live there is a Half Price, Bookstore and I enjoy browsing, especially the clearance section and meeting interesting people, I think being around used books is big factor in that enjoyment.

A retired teacher.

At HPBooks I can meet people, and have a short conversation which usually it starts when I inquire with a question about a book they are browsing and the conversation unfolds…

STEM—Fremont is in the Silicon Valley area, Lam, Tesla and Seagate (operational headquarters) are examples of local businesses, and is home to many Valley employees.

Fibonacci is a series of numbers associated with many different “things,” such as artistic proportions and technical analysis of stock charts.

(Except for the first man, every shirt has writting on it.) .

Alameda Creek

Its difficult for me to throw things away., Its like spending money down from savings . . .

Whatever is the “thing, it is a thing made from a piece or some pieces of this Earth.

When I throw it in the garbage its got nowhere to go,

If it can be recycled , that is great.. Some things things are donated in the hopes others will use them.

Some, things , such as glass and paper, but not enough, can be recycled through technological processes.

Other stuff just goes to “the dump.”

Some of that “dump stuff” takes very-very more than people’s life times to be returned to Earth. And it sits there decaying, “entropying”, and wasting space and energy that could be used more productively. for life on Earth.

Earth is the home of people, everyone born on Earth has a birthright to a place on this Earth. I do not mean “we should expect others to “share their very-very wealth.” and their “very-very power.” Rather we all should learn to respect everyone’s Birth Right, a right to a place and a life on this Earth. Just because yo draw a line in the dirt and call it a country does not give you more rights to the Earth than anyone else.

Of all the planets, in all the solar systems, in all the galaxies in Universe, Earth is the only one we know which has “ intelligent life”—us— on it . . . a life which is busy with some killing others so they can live their very-very lives..

Matter can not be created or destroyed and like a bank account which has no income, you only take out money for living and in the name of our “successful consumer economy” . we are busy spending down the very “bank account” which gave us life . . ..

. . . mostly so a very very few can be very very wealthy, while many of us not in that group, can live comfortable lives having families, homes and professional ,careers and others, well after all, maybe they did not have a birthright.,just born on this Earth by accident. . . .

while we hopefully pass the problems on to another generation. One day there will be nothing left., well not nothing, just nothing left that will support human life , but the “very-very some” will have their piles of consumer junk as memorials for future visitors from far off in space somewhere who will look on the piles of garbage just like we look on the pyramids today.

For most of my 76 years there have been a few recurring themes in my dreams,

I am somewhere in Boston trying to get back to Cambridge, maybe way out somewhere in Brookline, and I need to use public transportation which which takes me to a public transportation station on the Mystic Bridge, or is the Salt andPepper Bridge, it changes,

Sometimes I am lost downtown, I don”t recognize the stores, but I have to get across the bridge to get to Cambridge,

I am confused because the Mystic River Bridge does not go to Cambridge,

I pop out on Mass Ave some where between Harvard and Porter Squares and work my way back through Harvard square past Elsie’s over to Fairmont and River Streets where my apartment is occupied by someone else.

I am not known there where there is no room anyway, out on the street again, up Mass Avenue

Searching to find Brother Blue playing his harmonica and tambourine in time to his stories with his blue fringe swirling around his turning.

My dreams make no sense either, so to remind me of this Buddha holds a chard -with-rope-texture presented to me at Chaco Canyon.

For me, its difficult to see this image too close, it feels like these lyrics from an Eric Anderson song:

Yes, I would only like to show you
That is all and nothing more
But I will go unbounded
Looking outside of your door

I Shall Go Unbounded Eric Anderson

I was involved in my mom’s care for a few years, sometimes i wold visit her and while she did not know who I was, she was real glad to see me, I wondered if it was because I showed up everyday. During the period of this image sometimes I would arrive and stand in front of her and she did not acknowledge me. Often I had a small click-and-shoot camera in my hand which minimized the intrusiveness of the camera as well as always enabled me to have one hand free.

We understand empirical information comes to each individual person using their five biological senses. While not every human being has five senses.perhaps for some related to genetic conditions and others from outside events later in life . . .

But all people don’t just hear or not hear—or see, touch, taste or smell—the “quality of hearing” is also distributed differently among everyone, each individual has different life experiences, associated with and because of their senses and Each experience is human.

This has an important affect regarding language which probably originated from, and is continually transmitted by, spoken words and human interaction. While individuals encounter ”Sounds&Words” uniquely most of the differences are very minor, you could say ”nano-differences.

In order to survive society (such as we might think of a “culture), i.e. has stability, even though each individual is unique, there has to be enough “close to common experiences” to produce a language, a common shared view of the world. Still there are those who think these human differences are worth killing over.

Words are not real in themselves. House? We all know what is a house, I say “Go to the green house on the left!” and even though that house is a unique house in this Universe, you know what I mean and can find it. We use the concept “house” in the conversation as a tool to see the individual unique house .

Human behavior in a society—which we are by nature—creates a shared common meaning to an individual sound creating common sounds representing general concepts which individuals use to apply to specific situations. The sound (word) is more than just a shared meaning for communication, its a human tool for knowing.

One human quality is the ability to differentiate a “thing” from other“ things.”People differentiate “things” from each other, create a unique sound , i.e. a word for the thing and by using it make it a common shared meaning..How long were people building this foundational human database of can eat this /can’t eat that; safe here not safe there; and so on and so forth. The same wall is different for everyone.

A phonetic alphabet enables people to creatively use letters to create new words and then pronounce a new sound. never before spoken. Over the past 40 years marketing has done this especially in corporate and drug names _though I personally enjoy when Joyce did it in Finnegans Wake.

What ever communication animals have it is not the same quality as human language which not only communicates as animals can do, but creates common meanings among people.

Its fascinating that this quality is a uniqueness of human beings. For other animals sounds are specifically used for communication, For people sounds have common meanings and individuals who share that common meaning may not have had the experience. Animals have common meanings when each of the individuals has the common experience g to be associated with a sound, such as “danger” or “food.” Unlike animals humans can “walk in each other’s shoes”—when we try.

Even though we are all unique, the natural process of be1ing a human being creates a commonness of the uniqueness —if it does not then the “society,” i.e. the individuals, does not survive.
We have survived, we are here ,we all have it, just some use it for their personal benefit at the expense of all.

Senses are how we know. Without sensual input we cannot interact with the Universe, we cannot know the universe. Language is a human created tool to successfully (survive) interact with the universe .

Marshall McLuhan argued that print had resulted in people disproportionately using more sight with less use of other senses, the implication being that print created a society in which people do not use their senses in balance. Specifically McLuhan suggested that the emphasis on “visual sense” ”resulted in only knowing the universe as a bunch of linear causal relationships.

I listened to a report on NPR by an anthropologist working in the Australian outback who was discovered by a group of people who had never encountered a “different people” before .On inquiry how did they discover them? The people answered that, from about a mile away., they could smell them. they know it was other people by the smell and they were curious. (Note: this explanation is over simplifed and over generalized but the important parts are as reported).

i like zen because of the stories.
Monks were arguing over the possession of a cat. Nan-ch’uan appeared, took hold of the cat and asked, “If any of you can say something to the point he will save the life of this creature; if nobody can, it will be killed.”
No one could so the cat was killed. Later when Chao-chuo returned Nan-ch’uan told him what happened. Chao-chuo took off a sandal .put it on top of his head and went away.
Nan-ch’uan said, “Had you been here a moment ago , you would have saved the animal’s life.”

Original Teachings of Ch’an Buddhism Chang Chung-Yuan

When you first read the story you cannot understand it. When you think about it a while you come to understand it and as time goes by you forget it—the story does its job and then goes away.

That’s why I wonder if I meet a buddha, or a bodhisattva, would I know it? Maybe it makes no difference to the buddha, but the bodhisattva who is delaying their “buddha hood” to help me, or someone like me—maybe someone not like me— become a buddha. Why waste their time?

The fashions in the 1960s, 50 plus years ago, three young fashionably dressed urban men on a small bicycle . . .

Three young men in blue jeans riding down the country road in the back of a pick up, the two on the ends look like brothers, maybe all three are, but I cannot know from this angle, maybe you can.

Sharing something common with myself, I could not do it without the camera as I am too selfie-ish.

After a day walking around Tokyo, just before closing I pickup some discounted sushi in the department basement store, some beer at the Ozeki Asakusa Kaminarimon store and transfer images to the hard drive before going to sleep.

The first time I stayed in a Tokyo Hotel my sister made the reservation. It was a big hotel in Shinjuku and it was the tiniest room I have been in. When I asked the english speaking-clerk he said that if I wanted a cheaper room there were two more smaller sizes for less less money.

Bones to ink—Oracle Bones to I Ching

The earliest known form of Chinese writing are the “Oracle Bones” (甲骨) of the Shang dynasty (about 1600BC -1046BC) a period also technologically associated with the Xia dynasty which preceded it and the Zhou which followed. as The Bronze Age. The writing was on animal bones, usually the shoulder of a cow or the bottom of a turtle.

These three images are CC, you can find information @

They were used to divine answers about the weather and other subjects of concern. A hot metal rod was poked into the bone creating cracks which were then divined to gain understanding. The writing usually included the question, the divined answer and general terms of the situation including names and the date.

Traditionally it was common for farmers to sell them to the “pharmacist” to grind up as medicine. About 1900 it was determined that they were divining tools from the Shang dynasty creating the oldest connection between the present and the written past.

The characters evolved over the millenniums

With the Zhou dynasty the Oracle Bones were replaced by Yarrow stalks and sixty-four hexagrams, the work of King Wu and his brother The Duke of Zhou with the Zhou I —or centuries later came to be called I Ching, aka The Book of Changes.

Alameda Creek

As long as Covid keeps up , for me, not much changes along Alameda Creek. Keep feeling should go somewhere; think everyday its the same thing; am getting older; got to get out and do some more stuff before cannot; . . . Walking along the creek daily for over 14 years and another 14 years walking my dog, meeting different people over those years. These are my weekly images.

When I see someone, generally I make an hello gesture—say something, or wave a hand. or sometimes its a look of the eyes combined with a nod of the head. Most respond, some do not even look at me, others are talking on their phones and Iid I know know them there is usually a quiet wave of hands.

We often assign causes to events—we call it understanding and a method of knowing—which requires there to be a thing differentiated and defined from other things, another thing related to it, and a description of events during at the duration.

One could say that the Universe does not much care abut al this or any of it, it just happens. Small particles move around here and there, they have affairs with other particles to make “things” which entropy and new things are created while old things dissappear

The Universe does not care?

Yet the Universe created people who care and the people are part of the Universe so it does care. Maybe the Universe created people to solve problems it could not solve, such as entropy or otherwise known its own demise.

The Universe created people to solve the problems of its own entropy , a quality of its own making or perhaps it was damage done to the Oneness during and/or after the Big Bang.

Entropy into what? Entropy with what?

Entropy is what happens inside the Universe. If the Universe were to entropy outside the Universe that would imply there is something outside of, separate from, the Universe. Perhaps cathie one “Our Universe.” Still universe means one and to suggest there are more universes than the one we know is to suggest that the Universe is not a universe at all, but one “thing” of another set of “things” which is more properly given the letters “uni.”

How do humans fit into the Universe. Is it even an important question given our material representation —what % of the Universe is human mattter to compared o non-human matter in The Universe ? What is Human matter? Matter in the Universe which is aware of itself.

But not aware of itself as of the Universe but as separated from The Universe. We know who we are because we separate ourselves from the ting we are.

OK, OK , so what else can you show me? Stand upside down inside handcuffs?

Maybe the Universe did not make us, but we happened in spite of the hopes, intentions, dreams or efforts of the Universe. Maybe the Universe kicked us out— like the Christian God kicked Adam and Eve out of Eden for eating the fruit of knowledge and there is not other place to go,

Humans are forever floating around in their alienation, an essential yet poorly designed part of the Great Oneness. Individuals separated from it until death, society never to find how to return because every effort only creates new things to know, to be never completely reunited again. Our endless job as a part of The Universe is not just to experience it like other forms of matter but to know it and report back, Humans are the Universe’s Department of Intelligence.

Is any of this results of conscious efforts of the Universe ? Alienation by accident or alienation by intent whatever people are the conscious effort of the Universe, whether by intention or by accident, to know itself.

A symptom of a Universe gone mad with mental illness—how can the universe be mentally ill when there is only one, it is what Is, nothing else with which to compare it, is its own standard. We are here to witness The Universe as both subject and object with no way of knowing if its gone insane.

Sometimes I think one basic problem is we have is there is no number 2, its a tool humans created to survive. Mathematics is often called the “pan-galaxy “ language but its humans that classify things into a same group and then we find they are different from each other and no matter which direction we look, bigger or smaller., there is no end to this process of differentiating and defining, What we perceive as “same things” is only because we do not know them well enough, yet.

Most Japanese people like to socialize while eating and drinking. Even when you just drop in on someone you might bring a present such as senbei or cake, over sencha and conversation. Outside the house you will see groups joyously eating, drinking and talking. Popular TV shows bring these experiences into the homes as entertainment often featuring the craftsmanship and culture of the food profession.

I had just finished dinner at an Okinawan restaurant with a big sign on the wall welcoming US soldiers, and within a could of blocks after leaving found a takoyaki outside window. Full as I was, could not resist, bought six and ate them.

She liked the Art Boxes of Joseph Cornell who put objects inside his boxes. Inside Winifred’s box (about 1970) are a crucifix and three plaster molded shell shaped vaginas. In the lower window is an offset printed image of The Last Supper with press-type and press-arrows indicating clams are being served for Dinner. I may have known what, if any, religion she associated with, but I do not remember, its a work of Art, and does not make any difference.

Winnifred was my sister’s best friend in college, I became friends with her and her husband in Boston and later when they moved to Vermont where she worked a curator in a local museum and taught art. A few years later, mid 970s she moved to Los Angeles to work as a curator of an established museum and tragically, too soon after, she died in an automobile accident.
She left this piece with me before going to LA.

Inside three small plastic babies and clam shell.

Does this guy look like he is the eyes, the ears, the nose, the mouth and the tongue of The Universe?

We all are, whether we are paid to be here or not ,and some even get paid just have their \\photograph there.

By the end of this post are you supposed to know me better?

all dharmas are marked with emptiness;
they do not appear or disappear,
are not tainted or pure,
do not increase or decrease.
Therefore, in emptiness no form, no feelings,
perceptions, impulses, consciousness.
No eyes, no ears, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind;
no color, no sound, no smell, no taste, no touch,
no object of mind;
no realm of eyes
and so forth until no realm of mind consciousness.

Mind hiding fore matter

Almost everyday I fast walk four miles along Alameda Creek between Beard Road  Staging  Area and Isherwood. I don’t mind it.

At home with my evening meal  I like to drink sake using “japanese folk pottery”—Nihon Rokkoyo.

A Bizen  tokkuri and a Mashiko guinomi are a fun combination.

As is Bizen and Kuo-Oribe. Bizen uses ash glaze, the tokkuri below is the father,  the one above is the son.  While using a tokkuri from one  kiln and a guinomi from another makes an interesting visual experience, its the tactile experience that is sought after. Bizen feels rough and with oribe  everytime you pick it up you  experience something new about the shape

Oribe tokkuri and a Setoguro  guinomi. I prefer “functional pottery.”   Functional  pottery and more so high fire pottery was a major human creation that enable people to survive and grow. Functional pottery used everyday as basic tools of survival and thankfully great potters who made the everyday experience more meaningful  than just another tool. I do not see how something that sits in a museum where the “potter” calls himself (or herself ) an “artist because they made  something meant to not be used but to be looked and admired?”just misses the point.

But then again fake news is knowhere and you have to respond for yourself.

Hui-neng (惠能) was the Sixth Patriarch of Chan, he could not read or write, maybe he was not educated  into thinking he actually knew something.

Imagine before printing, a book  was written—first draft, editing , second draft, layout and design, all done at once, any editing was done in the second printing and  as they were hand printed”  the first one and the second were not the same. After printing every edition was the same, until after it was read  when it was “personalized” not by the author or published, but by the reader.  Yesterday inHalf Price Bookstore clearance section for $2 I got a copy of Frankenstein: Or The Modern  Prometheus. There was no new layout or typesetting, rather the pages of a previous early printing was photocopied. Its been many years since I read it,

“I learned that the possessions most esteemed by your fellow creatures were, high and unsullied descent united with riches. A man might be respected with only one of these advantages; but without either, he was considered , except in very rare instances ,as a vagabond and a slave, doomed to waste his powers for the profits of the chosen few! ”

After awhile or a while after, or perhaps  it was actually before, Hui-neng was lucky he was not asked to cut off his arm like Huike (大祖慧可), maybe he was not educated to mind..

For my celph , I just  try   to keep my feet on the ground

And blind my mind to line my ways

We all may start out the same but too much exposure makes each of us an individual. These are images of something we see everyday—the top of the letter “S” (in one case the bottom) in the word “STOP” painted on the street. Laws of Entropy? or nature just cannot control itself.

Beautox and silly cones

I was trying to remember what it felt like to kill someone . . its an exercise I do, remembering something that never happened.

You might be inclined to ask,  “Is it better to eat or not to eat before undertaking this kind of effort?.” Is it better to be hungry and work harder to finish faster or be physically  satisfied and only driven by your own choices?

Or maybe not driven all,  just meaningless incoherent dead ends

Many people treat “culture” as a noun defined by a bunch of  things such as you migh tfind in a museum, listen to at iTunes, behaviour at dinner . . .

You might also think it aa field, like in the term  gravitational field,  things  larger and smaller in space and they could be dropping  but just be being where they are it appears something  (we call gravity)  holds them in place, there is a predicable structure to their positions  in space and while  its always changing, we can predict the changes.

Wherever people are in a group, i.e. family, clan, village, city,  short term, long term, the interactive  behaviour  of the individuals  generates a structure of human behaviour, a structure of society.  Its always conservative as it is generated by past (or trailing) behavior.  When change occurs there is a meeting, but what causes changes?

Living in the suburbs , walking along,  looking or just enjoying the changes along Alameda Creek ,

I have lived here for 25 years, walked tens of thousands of miles,

And it changes all the time.

Circles make it simpler.

its just one continual change  the never ending, never the same while  ever the same . .

Little differences, smaller meanings where my androids, while plotting my demise, dream of electric ecstasy.

While the blue is the same color, the small circles appear darker, we learned that in color class , an important skill for designing posters  when to make the   small type and large  type visually look the same color you make the smaller type lighter or the larger type darke.

Corners are still corners . . .

and I change all the time too, but no one notices, my feelings   get bigger or smaller depending on where you see me but people still think its the same me as was seen   before.
